Memphis Depay makes his Lyon debut against Marseille

by Sam Peoples

Memphis Depay made his debut for Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday night in their 3-1 victory over Marseille.

The Dutch winger came on for Mathieu Valbuena with ten minutes remaining and helped Lyon see off what was a comfortable win overall.

For Memphis, it’s the start of a new era and chapter in his career. Moving to France helped Mario Balotelli re-find his form and Hatem Ben Arfa got back to his best too, so there’s precedent for players using it as a positive springboard – Memphis has to try and replicate that.

He looked like he did have a bit of a spring in his step and I suppose who can blame him? It’s been a season to forget for him as far as his time at Man United is concerned so he’s probably just happy to be playing football again!

Will Memphis ever play for Man United again? I doubt it but United have got a first refusal option if he was to tear it up at Lyon and fulfil the potential which brought him to United in the first place. We’ll keep an eye on how he gets on and wish him the best of luck with Lyon.
