He insists Marcus Rashford could be Man United’s first-choice striker for years to come once Ibrahimovic and Rooney decide to move on.
The pair are entering the latter stages of their careers and will be replaced sooner rather than later, however Owen believes Mourinho does not have to look elsewhere as Rashford is capable of covering the job.
He said: “Wayne and Ibrahimovic at some point are going to retire and it’s who’s going to take the mantle on as the regular No 9?
“As soon as those two players are no longer at the forefront for Manchester United, which isn’t going to be very long, then it’ll be really interesting to see who’s the next person to carry the can.
“One of those in line for it is Rashford. I’d say he’d be foolish to move now because he could be the No. 9 for Manchester United for years to come, once his turn comes.”
Rashford has been brilliant since he broke onto the scene at Old Trafford and while he may be too young to lead the line at this moment in time, when Ibrahimovic decides to retire, he should be fine to guide the side forward.
His development has been excelled by Ibrahimovic’s arrival at the club and there’s no doubt that learning from one of the best in the world will be massively influential.
