Jose Mourinho discusses squad rotation ahead of Wigan Athletic

by Tanveer Arayan

Jose Mourinho will look to rotate his squad for Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Wigan Athletic following Manchester United’s Thursday night exertions against Hull City.

Man United, going into the game with a two goal cushion, fell behind in the first half following Tom Huddlestone’s controversial penalty.

But Mourinho’s men duly responded, with Paul Pogba‘s goal in the 66th minute setting up a clash with Southampton at Wembley next month.

The 54-year-old, speaking after the game, made it clear that he would rotate his squad ahead of the clash with Warren Joyce’s side.

“It’s another difficult game against Wigan,” he said.

“They didn’t play, they are fresh, preparing and will be ready with special motivation for Warren [Joyce] and his players.

“Now we go home, it’ll take three hours to arrive, and have to prepare again. We will change some players and give some opportunities, some fresh legs to the team and, hopefully, we can do it.”

It was clear against Marco Silva’s side that some United players, following recent exertions, were displaying signs of fatigue as the game went on.

Michael Carrick, for one, failed to produce his usual urgency and poise at the base of midfield, seeing the ball being pinched from his feet on a number of occasions. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was another lethargic presence – understandably so when you consider that the Swede has only missed two games this season.

United fans will be keen to see Mourinho hand youngsters like Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebewho, according to the boss, is close to making his first team debut – on Sunday.
