Jose Mourinho gives 28-second interview following Manchester United defeat

by Tanveer Arayan

Jose Mourinho was in a notably sour mood despite seeing his Manchester United side reach the League Cup final, giving a post-match interview that lasted just 28 seconds.

Tom Huddlestone’s controversial first half penalty gave the home side a foothold in the tie, but Paul Pogba‘s 66th minute strike essentially decided the tie.

A late goal from Oumar Niasse precipitated a nervy last few minutes, but Mourinho’s men held on and secured their place at Wembley next month.

But Mourinho, despite being just one game away from his first trophy at Old Trafford, was in no mood to celebrate during his post-match interview.

“I just want to say congratulations to my players because it was a difficult road to be in the final and we are in the final,” he said.

“I don’t want to say anything else because it’s enough. I’m calm, I behaved on the bench, not sent off, no punishment, so no more words.”

This was Mourinho at his most viciously pragmatic: a grand majority of managers would be gushing into the microphone after reaching the League Cup final, but you could tell that the 54-year-old’s mind was elsewhere, clearly more interested in mentally deciphering the last 90 minutes, with one eye towards the next obstacle.

The more I watch these relatively awkward 28 seconds, the more I’m convinced that Mourinho had planned these words before leaving the dug-out. This is the kind of man he is: completely uninterested in offering empty post-match platitudes for journalists to lap up and instead focused on his group of players moving forward.
