Henrikh Mkhitaryan has expressed a desire to continue his impressive partnership with Anthony Martial at Manchester United this season.
The pair started together during Man United’s 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday, with Martial occupying the No.9 role and Mkhitaryan playing on the left hand side.
They combined in emphatic style for United’s third of the afternoon, with Martial bombing forward before squaring the ball to Mkhitaryan, who duly tapped in to round-off a superb counter-attack.
The Armenian, speaking after the game, was quick to enthuse over his chemistry with the youngster going forward.
“It was a nice counterattack,” he said with a smile. “We link up with each other well. It was a good ball from him and I was happy to finish it off. Hopefully, we can create and score more goals like that as the season carries on.”
This was the first time that Martial featured at No.9 this season, and it offered United fans – and indeed Mourinho – a chance to see a different dynamic in comparison to how this side functions with either Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford at the masthead of attack.
What they saw was a powerful emphasis on speed going through the middle, with Martial clearly intent on bursting forward from deep and stretching Wigan’s back four by moving the ball out wide. It was, albeit against a relatively substandard Championship side, immensely effective, as demonstrated by United’s third goal.
