Paris St Germain’s new signing Goncalo Guedes has explained why he decided to join the French side ahead of Manchester United.
Reports emerged in the January transfer window linking the 20-year-old Benfica winger with a move to Old Trafford but he eventually chose to move to the French capital and link up with Carlo Ancelotti.
Speaking about his move, Guedes said PSG was the team he wanted to pick and pointed towards the French League being better for him at this stage in his career.
“I always wanted to pick Paris,” Guedes told RMC in France.
“I know that English and French football are different but honestly, I think that for someone my age, for someone young, it was was better to come to PSG because it’s a big club.
“Manchester would have helped me too, but I’d feel more at home here than in England.”
To be honest, I’m not sure where Guedes would have slotted into this Man United squad at all? We’re stacked on the wings to the point where Anthony Martial isn’t playing every single week! Of course, it may well be that United’s name was simply added to the pot to stir up interest in a player because it’s not like that hasn’t happened before.
January saw United sell Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay in a window which was more about Mourinho thinning his squad down to players he wanted rather than deadweight. In that sense, it was a real success. Could we have done with a new centre-back or central midfield signing? We can’t tell until the season progresses but with the players we’ve got we should be challenging for second position for sure.
