Jose Mourinho feels he cannot leave Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of his Manchester United team at the moment because of his performance against Wigan Athletic at the weekend.
Mkhitaryan scored Man United’s goal with a simple finish after a quite brilliant counter-attack which he spearheaded and the Armenian midfielder’s influence has continued to grow at the club after a shaky start.
With so many options on the wings there has been a lot of talk over who Mourinho should play but somebody who will certainly start tonight’s crucial game with Hull City where United can gain points on their rivals, Jose is sticking with Mkhitaryan.
“Do you want me to leave Micki out after him being Man of the Match and playing so well as he did?” Mourinho said ahead of the game.
“I can’t! I think the players pick themselves, I’m just here to analyse what they do and to try to be fair with them. After such a good performance, Micki has to play. It’s simple.”
I completely agree with Mourinho that Mkhitaryan has to start for United. Jesse Lingard has his worth but for me he’s a squad player, he should play in certain games but looking at our starting XI Mkhitaryan is in it every time ahead of Lingard when it matters.
As for the left hand side, that’s another debate altogether with Anthony Martial‘s current situation but at least we’re seeing Mkhitaryan play more often than not now. He’s certainly come a long way since struggling at the start of his United career hasn’t he? Now he’s arguably one of the most influential players in the squad and the more he plays the greater that influence grows.
United need to win tonight against Hull to gain points on Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur and Mourinho will be looking towards Mkhitaryan for some magic on the Old Trafford turf tonight under the lights.
