Manchester United have agreed a £35m deal in principle to sign Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo in the summer, according to reports in Portugal this week.
Noticias ao Minuto say Semedo will join Man United in the summer as Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira did not want to let him go in January as Goncalo Guedes had already joined Paris St Germain.
Semedo, 22, is a right-back by trade and somebody who Man United were linked with in the January transfer window, so this is not the first time his name has cropped up and we’re not expecting it to be the last following these claims from Noticias ao Minuto. We were of course heavily linked with a move for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in the January window and the Portuguese press were convinced he was on his way to Old Trafford, so much so they said a deal was effectively done. Alas, he didn’t join. We’ll have to see what happens with Semedo to see if he follows in the footsteps of Nicolas Gaitan and Lindelof as a Benfica player whose transfer saga doesn’t end with a move to United.
One point to note about all this is the fact that right-back, for me, is one of United’s most solid positions. Antonio Valencia has been supreme in that role, so why would we spend so much on a new one when there are bigger issues in the squad? It’s certainly something to think of.
