Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu admits he would like to play under Jose Mourinho at some stage in his career.
Soyuncu, 20, has been scouted by Manchester United officials according to reports from Turkey and Mourinho is expected to be in the market for a new centre-back when the summer transfer window comes around.
The only defender Mourinho has signed so far was 22-year-old Eric Bailly, somebody who has since established himself as a brilliant talent and one who very few fans knew about prior to Man United signing him, and Soyuncu may well like to follow in his footsteps in the future.
“I admire Jose Mourinho, not just his football but his philosophy,” he said.
“I would like to work with him in the future.”
In the respect that very few people knew about Bailly prior to signing him, and the fact he was only 22, there are some parallels with Soyuncu and he’s certainly looking like a top talent.
With Feiburg this season the 20-year-old has become very established having played the full 90 minutes in every Bundesliga match in the last seven months. He’s also broken through into Turkey’s senior national team as well. Young, established defenders are hard to come by in modern football but Soyuncu may well be one.
Mourinho’s signings so far have been superb. All four summer arrivals have established themselves to be key parts of the squad and it’s hugely refreshing after years of tumultuous transfers under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, some of which really didn’t work out – take Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin as four examples of that. In that sense, Mourinho has certainly got the trust of fans with the players he goes after.
Bailly was not the centre-back any United fan expected us to go after in the summer but that has worked out brilliantly as Mourinho’s scouts did a superb job with choosing him. Will Soyuncu be the next arrival in that area of the pitch? He has made it clear he’d be excited for the move but whether United are interested in him at this stage remains to be seen.
