Jamie Redknapp: Jose Mourinho can win the treble at Manchester United this season

by Leo Nieboer

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United can win an unconventional treble comprising of the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup this season.

Jose Mourinho‘s men can claim their first major trophy of the season later this month against Southampton in the League Cup final after seeing off Northampton Town, Manchester City, West Ham United and Hull City in earlier rounds.

They will reach the FA Cup quarter final with a win over Blackburn Rovers and face Saint-Etienne in the Europa League last 32 this month.

And Redknapp, writing for the Daily Mail, noted that Man United could claim an unlikely treble this season.

“If Manchester United finish in the top four and win a trophy this season, Jose Mourinho will view that as a successful start to life at Old Trafford,” he said.

“United are still fighting in the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League. With Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk out, I expect United to win the League Cup, but landing all three would be a statement of intent from Mourinho.

“A treble would be the perfect platform for an assault on the Premier League next season and it is what Mourinho should be targeting.”

If you told me that, by the start of February, United would be five points off second spot, one game away from winning the League Cup and still going strong both the FA Cup and Europa League, I would have ripped your hand off.

This is, despite Mourinho’s insistence back that United would need to deliver instant results, a transitional season at Old Trafford – a period mainly dedicated to exercising the demons of last season. With this in mind, one has to admit that Mourinho is taking his side in a very promising direction.
