Luke Shaw was fit to face Leicester City at the weekend yet Jose Mourinho chose not to include him in the match day squad at all. Now, ahead of the game with Watford on Saturday he’s been training once again.
Shaw, 21, played the full 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup on 29 January but hasn’t featured since and it’s been a perplexing time for fans. His performance was, in my opinion, the best we’d seen at left-back in some time yet Jose Mourinho dropped him for the games against Hull City and Leicester off the back of that.
It’s a strong message from Mourinho that he still wants more from Shaw and he will no doubt have been working hard this week to force his way into earning another chance.
Shaw wasn’t brilliant against Wigan but defensively he was as strong as a left-back had been in some time. Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian have all tried to replace him but none are as good. He might have had a nervous game going forward but the only way that will improve is with more game time.
Watford away was a game where Shaw was heavily criticised by Mourinho in public after his performance but hopefully it will now come full circle and Watford at home can be where he re-establishes himself because the sooner that happens the better.
