De Gea was set for a move to the Bernabeu back in August 2015, but the deal couldn’t be completed before the transfer window closed.
The Spaniard, who signed a new contract at Old Trafford after the deal broke down, has reportedly remained on Madrid’s radar ahead of the transfer window.
But according to talkSPORT, Zidane has dropped all interest in De Gea, expressing a preference for Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois instead.
Manchester United supporters will welcome the moment that Madrid, after years of fruitless pursuit, finally give up on De Gea. The entire episode was, above anything, a hampering distraction for the squad, the manager and indeed supporters, who have always displayed nothing but support for the 26-year-old since day one.
On reflection, the whole thing was something of a giant mess. Madrid could have waited for one more year and signed De Gea for free, but instead chose to deliberate over the bid until quite literally the last minute before ultimately losing out.
This was, not for the first time, Madrid’s loss and Man United’s gain (*cough* Pogba *cough*), and supporters will hope to see the Spaniard remain between the sticks for many more years.
