Jose Mourinho reacts to Anthony Martial’s performance against Watford

Jose Mourinho has praised Anthony Martial‘s approach to adversity in the last few weeks with his hard work behind the scenes after a man of the match display against Watford.

Martial got a goal and an assist in Man United’s 2-0 win over Watford in a game where fans where desperate to see him get back to his best after a tough period for him with so much pressure being piled on his shoulders thanks to the media.

He stood up to that test today with a wonderful display and Mourinho is particularly pleased with Martial for how he has conducted himself in the last month.

Speaking about Martial after the game, Mourinho said: “People sometimes forget that these teams like Watford and Stoke have very good players.

“I looked at this team and these players were in Italy when I was in Italy for Napoli, Inter, Lazio. These are top players.

“In the first half the football was fabulous. The fans got behind the team just before we scored the goal because we were phenomenal.

“When I got the job they were saying at Manchester United you need to play the football in a certain way and I agree.

“You cannot play a counterattacking style, but then you have to analyse the situation.

“Martial deserves the chance. He has worked harder than ever in the last two weeks in the way I like – silence but hard.”

Martial did deserve his chance and my did he take it today. With Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in full flow on the wings, United looked the real deal against Watford – their defence really couldn’t do anything to stop it and our complete dominance in the game was representative of that.

None of us doubted Martial’s ability to bounce back and he vindicated that with what was a sizzling display against a Watford team which tried to be resolute right up until the final whistle. Mourinho has pushed him to try and get more out of him and by the looks of that performance, it’s work which has paid off.

Here’s hoping this is now a turning point for Martial. I want to see him in that starting XI every game he is available because with him and Mkhitaryan playing together, we look like United of old going forward at times and that’s so exciting to see.
