Shaw’s absence has left Man United fans concerned over his future given he’s easily the best natural left-back at the club and his continued lack of involvement is beginning to frustrate some fans as well.
Speaking about Shaw, Mourinho said the 21-year-old simply had to wait for his chance and continue working hard in training but insisted there were no issues between him and the player.
“He has to work and wait,” Mourinho said.
“Against Watford I wanted one defender on the bench and the defender is someone who can play in more than one position.
“(Matteo) Darmian can play left-back, right-back and an emergency central defender for us so my choice was Darmian.
“The only thing I can say is that Luke is working well. He doesn’t have any problem and he is working well. He is fighting hard. There is no problem with him. He is fighting hard.”
Once again, fans have to trust in Mourinho and believe his man management approach will get the right results with Shaw just like it did with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and if his performance against Watford is anything to go by, like it has done with Anthony Martial.
The scepticism comes in the fact the Shaw situation is a little bit different because of that horror injury he suffered away at PSV Eindhoven. Maybe Shaw needs a bit more patience, to be afforded more time, to have an arm round the shoulder on occasion? Who are we to know looking from the outside in but it’s a tough period for a player who has had a cruel 18 months.
Time will tell whether Mourinho’s words ring true that he has no issue with Shaw and the opportunity to return into the team is inevitable. I certainly hope it is, all United fans hope it is and with so many games coming up in multiple competitions, maybe a regular run of games is just around the corner for Shaw.
