Niall Quinn insists Anthony Martial needs need to turn it on more often at Manchester United following his impressive performance in the 2-0 victory over Watford on Saturday afternoon.
The 21-year-old set up the opening goal of the game after he crossed in the ball from out wide, and then wrapped up all three points as he found the back of the net in the second-half on the counter attack.
He has been in and out of starting line-up in recent weeks even though he set up two goals against Wigan Athletic earlier in the month as Jose Mourinho claimed he had to work harder.
Speaking about his position in the squad, Quinn claims he needs to establish himself as a starter under the Portuguese boss.
“In the first 15, 20 [minutes] he gave the ball away a bit, and then he really got the bit between his teeth and got the hang of it,” he said.
“He started playing a very important part, obviously with the cross to set up the first, but he got really direct otherwise.
“He can turn it on, we know that, we’ve seen it in snapshots, we just need to see it more often. He was a real threat all day, he was lively and did things at pace, but he did real intelligent things.
“He got his reward with the goal, and it was an opportunity he had to take, and he did. That will give him the confidence to kick on.”
Supporters are very aware of Martial’s talent at the club, especially after last season, and I’m delighted that he’s begun to find his feet under the Portuguese boss.
He deserves to start each week as he offers a different dynamic to the squad and after his display against Watford, there’s no doubt Mourinho will be looking to play him again.
