Anthony Martial is keen to rekindle his rivalry from St.Etienne which he grew to know from his times as an Olympique Lyonnais player.
Martial spent three years in Lyon’s academy before breaking through in 2012 and although he only made a few senior appearances before AS Monaco signed him, he hasn’t forgotten about the bitter Rhone-Alpes rivalry between the clubs.
That added spice has given Martial another reason to want to shine against St.Etienne in the Europa League knockout games coming up in the next two weeks.
Speaking to ManUtd.com about the rivalry, Martial said: “There was a huge rivalry while I was still at Lyon – it was always a highly-charged atmosphere and they were usually massive games, the kind all players love to play in.
“So there will be that added competitive edge whenever I play against them. We know it will be a difficult match but if we play with all our quality, I think we can do good things.
“Of course, it would be great if I could score against them again, but I hope we can win the game because that’s the most important thing, then it would be a bonus if I managed to grab a goal.”
Martial deserves to be in United’s starting XI on Thursday after his performance against Watford at the weekend and back in his Monaco days, he did score a wonderful goal against St.Etienne so he’ll have great memories of that.
As well as Martial playing against his former rival, Paul Pogba will line-up against his brother Florentin for the first time in his professional career. Football always has its side stories and United’s game against St.Etienne is no different.
United have got a tough period of fixtures coming up with five games in the next two weeks including a cup final and Jose Mourinho will need all his players in top form, Martial included. A goal against Watford should have boosted his confidence which is very timely and if he can grab one against his former rival St.Etienne, that would mean the world to the Frenchman so here’s hoping he gets one.
