Atalanta midfielder and Manchester United target Franck Kessie has admitted to being flattered by Jose Mourinho’s supposed interest in securing his signature over the summer.
The Ivorian, who has previously expressed an interest in joining Man United, has been subject to interest from the 54-year-old, alongside being monitored by Chelsea.
Kessie has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, managing six goals from midfield in the process under manager Gian Piero Gasperini
And the 20-year-old, speaking to So Foot, noted that he was flattered by United’s interest, whilst also insisting that he would have to examine his situation carefully before making any big decisions.
“I read things in the press. I am very flattered that clubs of this level are interested in me,” he said. “This proves that I’m having a good season, that I continue to progress. I don’t want to go too fast.
“I don’t know if my club has received any offers. I’m under contract. We’ll see if we need to discuss anything. I like Bergamo. The city is nice, quiet, and I appreciate life in Italy, where I was well received.”
Mourinho’s interest in signing a young, sprightly midfielder dates back to way before this recent revelation. Monaco pair Bernardo Silva and Tiemoué Bakayoko have also been under the Portuguese’s radar in recent weeks.
But what sort of player is Kessie? Would he have a function in this current set-up?
Well, firstly, his international debut came at the age of 17, and since then he has continued to impose himself for both club and country, impressing many with his direct, enterprising style going forward. His style encompasses a level of tenacity in the middle of park, whilst also espousing a sense of clear attacking purpose.
That said, at the age of 20 he remains in the nascent stages of his development, and moving for him now would be a gamble. But make no mistake: he is certainly one to watch.
