Manchester United vs St Etienne: Early squad news

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s squad is in great shape ahead of Thursday night’s clash with St.Etienne at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will not be changing his defence from the side which beat Watford 2-0, so we will see a back four of Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Daley BlindThat means Luke Shaw will continue to wait for his opportunity but that may well come on Sunday in the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers.

Marcos Rojo is also available for selection having recovered from his injury but Phil Jones is missing due to the injury he suffered a few weeks ago against Hull City.

In midfield there is only one absentee and that’s Michael Carrick. Mourinho said his absence was down a minor muscular problem which means he could be fit to play this weekend and it is more of a precautionary move than anything else to keep him out of the side.

Up front, Wayne Rooney is missing. Mourinho confirmed he wouldn’t be part of the squad and gave a similar reason as to why Carrick was going to miss the match. It shouldn’t hurt United too much because we’ve got Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic who can all play as the striker as well as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata who can operate in the No.10 role.

I’m expecting Mourinho to put out a strong team tonight and the official team will be revealed at 7.05pm. We will bring you that as soon as it is released.
