Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has praised Jose Mourinho for cultivating a winning mentality at Manchester United this season.
Man United started brightly this season, claiming four wins from as many games in August, before enduring a dry patch that saw the gap between fourth spot and themselves stretch to nine points by the end of December.
However, a recent resurgence from Mourinho’s men has seen that gap close to just two points, with United unbeaten in their last 16 Premier League outings.
And Gerrard, speaking earlier this week, noted that the Portuguese was beginning to create a real winning mentality at Old Trafford.
“What he does is create a winning mentality,” he said.
“He wins big games, he brings silverware to whichever club he goes to. That’s what Manchester United are about – winning silverware.”
The message from Mourinho on day one was clear: he would make four big signings and encourage his side to invoke a style that resonates with what supporters want to see. A bold, individualistic, relentless approach, upheld by huge characters like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.
And while results continue to falter from time to time, nobody can doubt that Mourinho has galvanised the mental and tactical approach of this previously confidence-sapped squad.
