Albiston made 485 appearances during his time at the club and insists the 21-year-old must be given a long run in the team to help him re-find his best form.
He has not been in Mourinho’s senior squad since he started in the fourth round FA Cup tie at home to Wigan, but hopes are he’s able to feature against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round at Ewood Park this weekend.
Speaking about the situation, Albiston is convinced Man United will be able to get him back to his best which was before his horrific leg break.
“I used to watch Luke when he was playing United’s youth side with Southampton and he stood head and shoulders above everybody else and I still don’t think there is any question mark over his quality,” he said.
“I think Jose Mourinho also wanted to sign him when he was at Chelsea so he must have been a fan of his ability.
“He can’t play anywhere else so he has to get a chance at left back again, take it and hopefully he will then be given a run of 10 matches. A churn of games like that and his confidence will return and things can just snowball for him.
“I believe if he can get those matches then we will see the Luke Shaw I remember as a youngster, the player United bought from Southampton and the one we saw before his horrific leg break. I am convinced we’ll see that player again.”
He’s been heavily criticised by Mourinho this season, after he was publicly shamed for his mistakes against Watford in the 3-1 defeat last September and then after claiming he wasn’t fit enough to play at Swansea in November.
Hopes are Mourinho is able to give him the chances he deserves because while other players have performed well in the left-back role, they haven’t been able to fill Shaw’s shoes.
