Paul Scholes believes Henrikh Mkhitaryan has started to demonstrate his true brilliance at Manchester United following his former side’s 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round.
The Armenian produced another scintillating performance at No.10 against Blackburn with his crowning moment coming in the form of a inch-perfect assist for Marcus Rashford after 27 minutes. It was a majestic pass with the outside of his boot and another individual moment of brilliance from a player who has continued to grow in confidence.
Man United supporters were quick to heap praise on Mkhitaryan for what was an excellent display and Scholes, speaking on BT Sport, expressed similar sentiments at full time.
“It was a great pass. We know he is capable of this,” he said. “We’ve seen it over the last few years at Borussia Dortmund. Now we’re starting to see him do it at Manchester United,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“The defending was horrendous. Great quality from Rashford to show composure to put the ball into the net.”
I’m still trying to get my head around the geometry of Mkhitaryan’s assist. I must have watched it at least nine times by now. The way he picks up the ball, charges forward and guides the ball around the entire Blackburn defence and exactly into Rashford’s path is nothing short of breathtaking.
Then again, this is what Mkhitaryan does. Nobody else on the pitch possesses the 28-year-old’s sheer range of vision, let alone the capacity to pull off moments of brilliance on such a regular basis. He has, following a period of exile, formed into United’s most potent creative threat, and supporters will hope to see it continue as the season goes on.
