Rooney has been in the shadows at Man United since he became the club’s all-time top scorer having been injured for the last few weeks and inevitable questions about his future are beginning to be asked.
Speaking ahead of St. Etienne, Mourinho was asked directly about Rooney’s future and said although he wouldn’t force him out of the club, he couldn’t guarantee he’d remain here past the summer.
“You’ll have to ask him,” Mourinho said.
“I can’t guarantee that I am here next week, how can I guarantee that a player is here next season? If Wayne does leave, it is not because I want him to leave, that is all I can guarantee.
“I will never try and push a legend of this club to another destiny.”
I think this summer is the right time for Rooney to leave United. He’s broken Sir Bobby’s record and is behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford in the pecking order. He’s now longer the main man at United and I’m not sure he’ll settle for it.
Where would he go? Everton is the most obvious option but moves to China and America have also been touted and Rooney certainly wouldn’t be short of options if he chose to leave but there’s every chance it won’t be his decision.
Rooney has been a great servant to United and all fans respect him for what he’s done at the club but there comes a time for any footballer when you have to move on. For Rooney, that looks like this summer.
