Sir Alex Ferguson was pictured in good spirits following Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Saint Etienne in the Europa League.
The former boss travelled to France to see Jose Mourinho‘s men, already three goals clear following the first leg, wrap up the tie with a smartly taken Henrikh Mkhitaryan goal and a clean sheet.
Supporters will find out their side’s last 16 opponent on Friday, with the draw set to take place at 12PM GMT.
Sir Alex, seen alongside former chairman David Gill, was clearly pleased to see his old side progress in Europe.
The great Scot doesn’t normally make too many trips away from home these days, but he was keenly looking on at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard as United eased past a potentially dangerous ASSE side. He was, as you may expect, handed a pretty good seat – just 20 yards behind the dug-out, close enough for Mourinho to feel his godly presence lurking behind him.
But make no mistake: this was a quintessential Mourinho performance. Man United arrived with a full-strengh starting XI, grabbed an early goal and held firm all evening, restricting the home side to an array of speculative long range drives. The Portuguese knows how to navigate the European game better than most, and this was another potent case in point.
