Paul Scholes: I want to see Jose Mourinho play this team against Southampton

by Leo Nieboer

Paul Scholes has revealed his preferred starting XI for Manchester United’s League Cup final encounter with Southampton on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho‘s men dismissed Northampton Town, Manchester City, West Ham United and Hull City on route to Wembley.

They will be without the injured trio of Michael Carrick, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Wayne Rooney for the clash with Claude Puel’s side.

And Scholes, following Man United’s 1-0 win over Saint Etienne, has picked his ideal starting XI ahead of the game on Sunday.

This is, without doubt, the biggest game of the Mourinho era so far, and any proposed starting XI deserves some serious consideration.

Let us begin with the back five: David de Gea‘s inclusion is a no-brainer, and you can hardly argue with the choice of full-backs, nor could anybody really question the inclusion of Eric Bailly. Some may prefer to see Marcos Rojo – now back from injury – start ahead of Chris Smalling, but the Englishman will be brimming with confidence after an improved performance against ASSE on Wednesday.

What about the midfield? Well, with Carrick unavailable, Mourinho will have to field a midfield trio of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini. Not much to debate here.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic‘s inclusion is another no-brainer, but some supporters may want to see the effervescent influence of Marcus Rashford ahead of Juan Mata in a game that will, no doubt, be played at a furiously high tempo.
