Ryan Giggs: What Marcus Rashford is doing at Man United is brilliant

by Leo Nieboer

Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford, noting that the youngster has surprised everyone with the way he has ascended up the hierarchy at Old Trafford over the past year.

The teenager erupted on to the scene under Louis van Gaal back in February 2015, netting four goals in his first two games, before earning a place in the England squad for Euro 2016.

He has continued to impose himself under Jose Mourinho this season, making 34 appearances in all competitions and managing seven goals.

And Giggs, who oversaw Rashford’s rise to prominence last season, was quick to laud the youngster for continuing to improve under Mourinho.

“I remember watching him the week before that game, it may have even been three or four days before that game, training with the reserves,” he said.

“He obviously stood out and he looked sharp, but little did we know that three or four days later he would be starring and ending the season so well and then going onto the Euros with England.

“His best position, really, is through the middle, coming up with the goods and he is just an exciting player. I think he’ll do well at United for a long, long time.

“The best thing of all is that Marcus is a good kid. He wants to improve, wants to be the best and to come through as a centre forward at United is not easy. I think probably the last person to come through the ranks and stay there as the centre forward was Mark Hughes.

“Historically you’ll buy centre forwards in and pay a lot of money for them, so it is brilliant what he is doing right now.”

The footballing world has expected Rashford’s bubble to burst for over a year now. His rise to stardom has been too surreal – too easy, above anything else – for it to ever last, but the Englishman has continued to assert himself at the very highest level.

The youngster’s opening season was characterised by a number of unforgettable, truly unexpected moments of game-deciding brilliance; this season, however, has seen Rashford bring an element of maturity to his approach. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has occupied the front pages this season, but the Englishman has displayed a palpable desire to place the team ahead of himself, conjuring up a number of selfless, indefatigable performances in the past few months.
