The Ecuadorian has kickstarted his career under the Portuguese boss this term, cementing his place in the starting line-up as Mourinho’s first choice right-back.
Before Mourinho’s arrival, Valencia’s future at the club was up in the air, but this season he’s looked like a completely different player, pushing Matteo Darmian out of his natural position as one of our most consistent players of the campaign.
Speaking about the situation, Valencia thanked Mourinho for getting the most out of him.
“I have to say thanks to the manager for these words,” Valencia said. “He’s definitely given me an incredible amount of confidence. I think it’s totally acceptable to say I have improved my game since then and he’s given me a lot of game time, which has been very important.
“I’m still quite an attacking player. I feel comfortable going forward because I have played as a right winger. I like to contribute to the attacks but it’s a bit more about not committing that error when playing at right-back.”
He’s been incredible this season, with Mourinho labelling him as one of the best right-back’s in the world and has showcased his desire to the cause at Old Trafford when he returned from a major surgery just three weeks after the operation and then proceeded to win the Man of the Month award.
Hopes are he can maintain his impressive form as Valencia has easily been one of our best players this season at United.
