Manchester United target Toni Kroos will leave Real Madrid over the summer if they fail to claim any silverware this season, according to reports.
Zinedine Zidane’s side, knocked out of the Copa del Rey, sit just one point behind Barcelona in La Liga with a game in hand; they are expected to get past Napoli in the Champions League last 16 following a 3-1 win in the first leg.
It was reported earlier this week that Mourinho, clearly mindful of a replacement for Michael Carrick, was closely monitoring Kroos, as well as defender Raphael Varane, ahead of a potential summer bid.
And according to Spanish media outlet Diario Gol, Kroos will demand to leave the Bernabeu if his side fail to lift any trophies this season.
You could argue that Kroos is being a bit dramatic here. I mean, Madrid won the Champions League as recently as last season, and should – from an outsider’s point of view, at least – beat a Barcelona side going through the motions under Luis Enrique to the Spanish title this season.
Then again, one has to admire the German’s insatiable desire for picking up silverware, and the prospect of playing under Mourinho – who is, above anything, a serial winner – could be too tempting to refuse if the right figure is presented.
