Guillermo Varela has been forced to undergo further surgery after complications with an ankle injury.
Varela, 23, is currently on loan at German side Frankfurt from Manchester United and suffered a serious ankle injury earlier this season which required surgery.
He’s only recently returned to action but Frankfurt coach Niko Kovac has confirmed further treatment was needed to help with the healing of his ankle.
Speaking about Varela, Kovac said: “It caused him problems repeatedly. He gave it his all, but he was in a lot of pain.”
“It shows his character that he wanted to give it his all for team and club.
“The wound must now heal, and then the stitches will be removed. This takes eight to 10 days.”
It’s such a shame for Varela because he showed plenty of promise and potential last year under Louis van Gaal having also impressed under Zinedine Zidane in Real Madrid’s B-team. Does he still have a future at Man United? He’s got plenty of potential but these injuries will really have knocked both his confidence and the opportunities in front of him.
We’ll bring you any further updates on his fitness but we wish Varela the best of luck in his rehabilitation from that serious ankle injury.
