Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer believes that Jose Mourinho will sign two big attacking players over the summer.
Various reports have suggested that Mourinho, still unsure over whether Ibrahimovic will remain at Old Trafford for another year, has pin-pointed the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane as potential targets ahead of the summer.
And Shearer, reflecting on Marcus Rashford‘s superb performance against Middlesbrough last Sunday, predicted that Mourinho would have a busy summer in the transfer market.
“I think he [Rashford] has got a big future in the game but he needs to be patient,” he said.
“I think Mourinho will sign one if not two big hitters at centre-forward or No.10 in the summer.
“Which in turn might mean that he [Rashford] will have to play on the left, which I don’t think is his best position.
“He’s very good at it because of this pace but he’s only 19.
“He’s going to learn, he’s at the right club, he’s learning from Ibrahimovic and whoever he brings in the summer – he’ll learn from them too.”
It would take a brave individual to outline how United will line up going forward next season. Ibrahimovic’s situation, for example, remains unclear, with some reports suggesting that the Swede would only stay in Manchester for another year if Mourinho’s men reach the Champions League in May.
His potential replacement is a different matter entirely but indeed equally ambiguous: speculation surrounding Griezmann’s future continues to thrive, and Lukaku’s recent dispute with Everton over a new contract has opened up the possibility of a summer move.
But whichever way you look at it, this promises to be a thrilling transfer window.
