He suffered the injury in England’s final training session ahead of Wednesday night’s friendly against Germany in Dortmund and was sent back to Manchester.
Gareth Southgate did not confirm the player that was involved in the incident, but reports claim it was a tackle from the 25-year-old’s United team-mate Chris Smalling.
Speaking about the injury, Southgate insists there will be an update on the extend of his injury within the next 28-48 hours.
“We don’t know the full extent of it,” he said.
“We have respectfully sent him back to his club and we will know more once he has had scans and an x-ray over the next 24-48 hours.
“It was just an innocuous tackle.
“Phil caught the bottom of his foot in the challenge and we think he suffered an injury to his toe.
“It is very unfortunate for him and a huge disappointment because he has been playing very well and he has had some injury difficulties in the past.”
It’ll be a massive blow for United, especially as they face a busy schedule of fixtures with nine games in the month of April.
He’s been brilliant under Mourinho this campaign and it’s a shame that he’s picked up an injury after he recently spoke out about his setbacks and what it meant to get a run of games under Mourinho.
Hopes are he recovers as soon as possible as there’s no doubt Mourinho will need his services while he rotates his players to manage the fixture congestion.
