The Portuguese boss sold Mata to Old Trafford in January 2014 during his second spell as Chelsea boss and many believed it would be the end of the Spaniard’s Man United career once Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal last summer.
However, Mata has made 38 appearances already this season and has been a vital player, claiming he’s still happy working with the Portuguese coach at Man United.
Speaking about their time together, Mata insists Mourinho has changed since their time at Stamford Bridge.
“Of course I was not happy to play less than before, and that I was happy to go to Manchester United, but our relationships have always remained cordial, although communication had become more difficult in the end,” he said.
“He’s since changed. He’s in a different environment, in a different club, with a different squad, and a different type of football, the goal of which is to attack and create goal opportunities.
“This is what we do, and he is satisfied with the performance.”
Mata is a very important player at Old Trafford and while he may not be picking up as many minutes as he’d like, the Portuguese boss is only rotating players to keep them fit during a busy schedule of fixtures.
The Spaniard has come with an intent to prove himself this campaign and he’s done that by producing the goods when he’s been relied upon.
