Manchester United players training with England for Lithuania clash

Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Chris Smalling have been videoed working hard ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier with Lithuania on Sunday.

Smalling, however, who featured for 84 minutes against Germany on Wednesday, will miss out on the clash after pulling out with injury on Friday morning.

He will join Phil Jones on the treatment table, but Lingard, Rashford and Shaw – all left on the bench in Dortmund – can look ahead to receiving more minutes under Gareth Southgate.

The video shows Smalling, prior to pulling out with injury, going through a warm down and the other three working hard in training.

It is, of course, wonderfully fitting that Smalling, after injuring Jones in training, would then go on to injure himself just a few days later. I can imagine the latter producing a wry smile as his teammate stumbles towards the treatment table.

But on a serious note, losing two first team defenders ahead of an April period consisting of eight games will be anathema to Jose Mourinho, and he will be desperate to see his remaining three England players come out of the game against Lithuania boosted by a strong performance as opposed to depleted by a painful knock.
