Manchester United are scouting Sporting Lisbon wonder-kid Merih Demiral, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho’s side have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old but could face competition for his signature as Besiktas have also been monitoring the youngster.
Scouts were in attendance with the Turkish U19 national team against Portugal and despite only making a handful of appearances at a youth level, he is attracting interest from European clubs.
He made an impression in the Fenerbahce youth team and has since made the move to Portugal to work on his career following the lack of opportunities with the Turkish giants.
Although he is relatively unknown in England, United are looking for a long-term solution in central defence, but if he is able to follow after Eric Bailly, who wasn’t very popular at the time of his transfer and then went onto control the backline, then it’d be a great deal for Mourinho.
With the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo switching places in the starting line-up, Mourinho will want to nail down a starting back-line, and while Demiral may still be a youngster, there’s a bright future ahead.
Given his inexperience and rawness, there are doubts that Mourinho is convinced on a summer deal, but he’s definitely one to watch.
