The Old Trafford club have allegedly started monitoring alternatives in Internazionale’s Samir Handanovic and Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.
De Gea came close with a move to Madrid in 2015 only for his deal to fall through due to administrative issues at the last minute.
He has since signed a new contract at United, but according to Independent’s Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney, there are concerns among the United hierarchy that he could leave this summer.
While Madrid have also been looking into signing Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea, the Spaniard is said to be the new number-one one of their top priorities.
It’s a great thing that United have been looking at potential replacements because if there’s no way of truly tying him down at Old Trafford, it’s best to get ahead of the game rather than being left without a goalkeeper at the start of the season.
De Gea has previously stated his delight with Jose Mourinho at Man United as he believed in what the Portuguese boss was building and while a move looked unlikely, a player would not confirm his intentions to leave a club so it remains to be seen if he’ll still be at Old Trafford past the summer.
