Jose Mourinho expects Manchester United to have an interesting summer transfer window and hinted he has already made his mind up on who he wants to sign.
During the international break Man United were linked with a host of players including Romelu Lukaku, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe and leading up to the summer there will be plenty of others whose names get thrown into the hat.
Mourinho’s signings so far have had a great impact at the club and looking ahead to this summer fans will be hoping for more of the same.
Speaking ahead of West Brom, Mourinho said: “I’m sure, at the end of the summer, probably we won’t have exactly my first options, because it’s difficult to succeed in every attempt, but I’m sure we’re going to do something interesting and something to improve our team for next season.
“I’m not a silly manager to say I give the names and you have to give me the players – not at all. I give the names, I give the options, I give the second options in case the first options are not possible, but I give all the information based on my analysis, my experience and projections for the future.”
If I had to name our priorities, I’d say United need a new centre-back, central midfielder and a striker. Mourinho will already have his options lined up and if we can land some real quality in all those positions, our squad is going to be in great shape.
But Mourinho sent out a warning to any potential transfer target of United with his expectations for anybody who wants to play for United at Old Trafford.
He said: “If the first thing you think is where are you going to live, well, think Los Angeles,” he said. “[LA] Galaxy would be the first choice and then think about going to the beach every day. There are beautiful places to live and to play.
“We want people that, if I call some guy or if Mr Woodward calls some player or some agent, we want people that are immediately engaged and dreaming about coming. This is the profile of the players we want. If they don’t want to come to us, good luck, enjoy your other club.”
Mourinho is a manager who knows exactly what he wants and as the season has progressed we’ve seen his United team taking shape. There have been plenty of frustrating draws along the way but you can see the improvements we’ve made and how we’re continuing to improve going forward.
Next year, after another summer transfer window, Mourinho will have had enough time and windows to build his United squad towards exactly what he wants it to be and with us hopefully getting back into the UEFA Champions League as well, the 2017/18 season is all set to be very exciting indeed.
