Pogba was named on the bench on Tuesday night, while Rooney and Valencia were not even named in the squad as they weren’t fit enough to play against Ronald Koeman’s side.
After featuring in a training session at Old Trafford just an hour after the West Bromwich Albion game, many believed Pogba would be back in action but he started on the bench to give the Portuguese boss more options and came on in the second-half.
Speaking about his players, Mourinho claims Valencia and Rooney were not available.
“Pogba was not ready to play last Saturday, is because after 48 hours he is not in the best of his game so good to have him on the bench to give one more option,” he said.
“Valencia is really, really tired. He come from Ecuador, arrive here, play 90 minutes, was a big effort for him, we need to protect him. Rooney yesterday had pain in both ankles, he couldn’t train and he is not available.”
Valencia has been a vital player at United this season and hopes are it’s just a simple rest to get him back to his best form as he’s arguably been one of our best players this season.
While Rooney may not be in action usually, the current injury crisis at the club could have been the perfect time for Mourinho to utilise his services and it’ll be a shame that he wasn’t able to pick up any game time.
