Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson believes that Paul Pogba could wear the armband at Old Trafford over the next few years.
The Frenchman, who arrived for a world record £89m over the summer, has established himself as a fundamental aspect of Mourinho’s midfield this season.
And Robson, speaking to Sport Witness, has highlighted Pogba as a strong contender for the role.
“Mourinho will make that decision regarding who’s captain, but once Paul Pogba is settled into the club again, gets used to the Premier League again, as long as he keeps improving, I think he’s captain material,” he said.
“I think Paul works really hard at his game. I think he wants to be one of best, if not the best midfielder in the world, so he’ll keep working at it, keep improving and become a real bright player for Manchester United.”
People often point towards Pogba’s haircuts, dancing and general off-pitch antics as contrary to what is demanded of a senior figure at Old Trafford. But this is little more than slander.
At the heart of the 24-year-old’s approach on the pitch is a raw, manifest desire to give everything, to do everything and indeed to win everything. He came to the club as a teenager, imbibed the club’s message, left for Juventus and won numerous trophies and came back – not because of the money, but because Manchester is his home. Handing him the armband would, with this in mind, make perfect sense.
