Jose Mourinho has opened up about Luke Shaw‘s improvement at Manchester United, claiming his change in attitude and training performances were the reason behind his involvement in the starting line-up against Sunderland.
The Englishman has been in and out of the squad and hasn’t featured much under the Portuguese boss this season and on the rare occasions that he’s been awarded game time, he’s been criticised by Mourinho for his displays.
He came off the bench against Everton last week and was able to win a penalty, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic salvaged one point, but was still criticised as Mourinho insisted that it was his decision but just Shaw’s body as he was shouting tactics from the touchline.
Speaking about Shaw prior to the Sunderland game, Mourinho insists he’s earned his place in the team.
“The attitude is improving, the training is improving,” Mourinho said. “The opportunities are coming, but not in a way that if he doesn’t perform especially well he doesn’t come back into the team again, it’s just the process of education, education as a player obviously, and today is an opportunity to play.
“A mistake can come, we know that a mistake at Manchester United level we pay for the mistakes but the reality is he is a young player and if his attitude improves like he is improving lately opportunities are always coming.”
He provides an attacking option on the left-hand side with his overlapping runs and is even better with his defensive duties.
Shaw deserves his place in the team, especially after his assist as he’s by far our best option at left-back and the quicker he can find his feet under Mourinho the better.
