Ray Wilkins backs Jose Mourinho over his treatment of Luke Shaw at Man United

Ray Wilkins has defended Jose Mourinho over his treatment of Luke Shaw at Manchester United this season.

The Portuguese boss has continuously criticised Shaw over the course of the campaign for his performances and even in training as Mourinho claims he’s failed to completely devote himself to the cause at Old Trafford.

Shaw has barely featured under Mourinho this season, as he made just his ninth Premier League appearance of the campaign on Wednesday night after previously starting seven games and making one substitute appearance.

Speaking about the situation, Wilkins believes Mourinho understands what he is doing.

Jose Mourinho is very good at man management,” he said.

“I imagine he has spoken to him on a couple of occasions. If the penny is not dropping, it’s a shame because he is a fantastic footballer.”

Even after his impressive performance against Everton, where he came off the bench to win a penalty in the closing minutes of the game which allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to rescue a point, Mourinho still criticised him.

He claimed Shaw was performing well but it was only because he was shouting to tell him what to do from the touchline and while it is disappointing his talent is being wasted, Mourinho knows best and understands how to get the most out of his players.
