Jose Mourinho explains why Wayne Rooney didn’t travel to Anderlecht

Jose Mourinho has opened up about why Wayne Rooney didn’t travel to Anderlecht ahead of the Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday night.

Manchester United travelled on Wednesday afternoon after their training session and although the Englishman was with the squad at Carrington, he did not travel with the rest of the players in the squad.

He was last in action as a substitute against West Brom and has since missed games against Everton at Old Trafford and Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of the clash, Mourinho confirmed Rooney has still not completely recovered from his injury.

“He’s not happy with his condition,” Mourinho said.

“He has a bad feeling with his ankle. Let’s see for the weekend.”

Rooney has suffered three injuries in the last two months with his only Premier League start since January coming in the draw with Bournemouth over a month ago.

He’s endured the poorest campaign of his Old Trafford career and even though he overtook Sir Bobby Charlton as the club’s greatest goalscorer, things haven’t been looking very well.

The Englishman has always bounced back from poor runs of form at United and while there’s still a chance of him fighting for his place in the side, he’s been heavily linked with a United exit with his future uncertain it remains to be seen if he’ll be at the club past this season.
