Jesse Lingard hails Ander Herrera following Chelsea win

by Leo Nieboer

Jesse Lingard has heaped praise on Ander Herrera in the wake of Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Spaniard supplied a superb assist for Marcus Rashford after just seven minutes before doubling his side’s lead soon after half time with a thunderous deflected strike.

But his game was primarily hallmarked by the superb man-marking job he did on Eden Hazard; the Spaniard followed him everywhere, ensuring that the Belgian had next to no influence on the game all afternoon.

And Lingard, speaking after the game, was quick to laud his teammate for the job he did for Jose Mourinho against his former side on Sunday.

“He [Herrera] put in a real shift,” he said.

“He was all over the place and we need individuals to do their jobs so that it comes together as a collective performance.

“It was tough, especially for the forward players doing all the running, but you know you have to put in a shift to get a good performance. We knew we had to close them down.

“We couldn’t let the defenders bring the ball out and play and we knew if we did that then the players behind us, the midfield and defence, would do their job of marking the players behind us.”

Herrera – and indeed many other members of the side – knew exactly what Hazard was about prior to this clash. He has wreaked havoc over Man United on several occasions, constantly eluding defenders with his mazy, seemingly intractable style on the ball.

Keeping tabs on him for 90 minutes, therefore, was no simple task: Herrera had to be brutal, give everything and know exactly where the Belgian was at all times. And he didn’t drop his guard once, bully Hazard out of the game and in turn nullifying Chelsea’s attacking verve at Old Trafford.
