Axel Tuanzebe trains ahead of Burnley…will he replace Marcos Rojo?

by Sam Peoples

Axel Tuanzebe has been training with Manchester United’s first team plenty this year and with Marcos Rojo suffering a season ending injury, Tuanzebe’s chance may come this weekend against Burnley.

The 19-year-old was given his senior debut by Jose Mourinho earlier this season against Wigan Athletic and now that Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are all sidelined with injuries, his options are limited and the Portuguese boss himself has already earmarked the possibility of Tuanzebe playing.

Speaking ahead of Burnley, Mourinho said: “Now we need absolutely everyone and I don’t have to think about Axel Tuanzebe going to the Under-20 World Cup in Korea because maybe Axel has to come now. We need everybody.”

Mourinho has also said he wants Jones and Smalling to be brave and push through the barrier to return as soon as possible but for me Tuanzebe is a far better option than two players who aren’t fit.

When Anthony Martial pulled up in the warm-up for Midtylland at home, Marcus Rashford was thrown into the mix. We’ve never looked back since after unearthing a gem. Who is to say the same thing can’t happen with Tuanzebe?

He was the boss as U18s captain and has been quality with the U23s too, give him the chance he deserves Jose and we may well be richly rewarded with another real gem in the first team.
