Owen Hargreaves has reacted to Marcus Rashford‘s sensational match-winning display during Manchester United’s second leg 2-1 win over Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-final.
The 19-year-old went for Anderlecht’s jugular from minute one, bursting in behind their back four and providing a smart assist for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 10th minute.
And then, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured, he stepped up in the 106th minute to produce a sumptuous winner, turning two Anderlecht defenders in one silky move before stroking the ball home to send Old Trafford into raptures.
And Hargreaves, speaking on BT Sport, was full of praise for the youngster following what was another jaw-dropping display.
“What a superstar this kid is going to be,” he said.
“The touch to set this goal up is stunning. The take, the little Cruyff is brilliant.
“Absolutely brilliant, the touch and the finish. He was cool and composed. That touch was amazing. He’s shown everything that he’s going to be one of the best.
“Everyone said he’d be the future. He’s the now.”
It felt as if this would be a season that saw Rashford take a back seat, reduced to featuring occasionally on the wing as he continues to develop at Old Trafford. A necessary filler campaign, perhaps, after the euphoria of his first campaign.
But just when we should be talking about Zlatan’s future and looking towards the big Swede for a suitable crescendo to what has been a mercurial season, it is indeed the teenager once again grabbing the headlines. He may be just 19, but ignore Rashford at your peril. He will make you remember his name. Anderlecht will certainly not forget it in a hurry.
