Jose Mourinho has explained his Manchester United team selection against Burnley, claiming he needed to play some new faces with the current injury crisis.

He lost Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the rest of the season with knee injuries and it’s a massive blow as they’ve both been vital players of the first-team this campaign.

Ibrahimovic is the club’s top goal scorer with 28 goals across all competitions and Rojo has cemented his place in the heart of the defence following his blossoming partnership with Eric Bailly.

Speaking prior to the clash, Mourinho claimed he has to try and protect players who have played too many minutes in recent matches.

“You know the problems we have. Injuries and more injuries, and people are really tired,” he said.

“We have to try and protect people, we have to try and have some freshness.”

He reintroduced the likes of Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney against Burnley and with many first-team players ruled out, Mourino has a massive task ahead to rotate the squad in the Europa League and Premier League to try and reach the main aim of a Champions League qualification for the end of the season.
