He’s been ruled out for the rest of the season as he’s expected to be on the sidelines for up to 12 months and there is growing uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.
Ibrahimovic has stalled over an extension on his current deal and his career will be assessed once his situation has been updated, as he’s set to undergo surgery in America.
Speaking at his press conference, Mourinho provided an injury update on Zlatan.
“The future is a big surgery, a long period of recovery, but the future is also in the end a very strong guy, mentally very very strong, that wrote immediately on his social media he will stop when he wants – not when people thinks,” he said.
“So it looks to me he’s not going to give up, he’s going to fight and I’m really pleased about that. He fought all his life since he was born, I don’t see a reason for him not to fight.
“I don’t know, I don’t want to know, I’m not interested in it, I don’t care about it.
“I just want the different surgery to go and we think he’s in fabulous hands and recover from the injury to prepare himself mentally for the next step and I think the next step will be something he really wants – which is what I was saying before the injury in the period of doubts over his future.
“He’s much more important than myself and what I want; I always want the players to be happy, to choose their future but now before such an important surgery I think it’s a waste of time to speak about what next.”
He’s been a vital player at United this season with 28 goals across all competitions and it’s a massive blow to have him out of action for so long.
It’d be a sad way for him to end his career at United and hopes are he’s able to get back to his feet because if there’s one player that can fight back, it’s Zlatan.
