Manchester United have a heavily depleted squad for Thursday night’s derby with Manchester City thanks to a series of injuries.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo are both absent thanks to cruciate ligament injuries and a real blow came on Wednesday when Jose Mourinho revealed Paul Pogba will miss the game as well through injury to join Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Juan Mata on the sidelines.
It leaves Man United with only a 19-man squad which checked into the Lowry Hotel ahead of the game and only 16 of those are outfield players which goes to show how much impact the injuries are having on Mourinho’s options.
United’s full squad (via Manchester Evening News): David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, Antonio Valencia, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Matteo Darmian, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney.
Hopefully Mourinho’s mind games are in full swing and Pogba secretly snuck into the Lowry through the back door and is fit to play City but I’m not holding my breath. We’ll have to make do without.
United were torn apart by City at Old Trafford earlier this season when we started with two midfielders but seeing as we’ve only got three senior central midfielders in the squad, Mourinho’s up against it and has limited options.
Three points away at City would be huge for United but if you asked fans would they settle for a point ahead of kick-off there would definitely be a few who would take it. That being said, we do still have plenty of quality in the squad. We’ll bring you the confirmed team news ahead of kick-off as always.
