Matteo Darmian unsure over Manchester United future

Matteo Darmian has cast doubt over his Manchester United future, noting that he cannot predict where he will be playing next season.

It was reported over the summer that the Italian, following a languid opening campaign at Old Trafford, was set on a move back to his homeland, with Napoli and Roma among those interested.

The 27-year-old remained at Old Trafford, however, and has been since used primarily as a second choice full-back, making a total of 22 appearances in all competitions.

And Darmian, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, was notably coy about where he would be playing next season.

“I wouldn’t know what to say right now [about the future],” he said.

“The campaign isn’t over yet and I am really concentrated on this final rush. I cannot predict my future.

“We all know that in this profession you can be somewhere one day and in a completely different place the next, but it would be inopportune to discuss it now.

“I am focused on getting the best with Manchester United, then at the right time we’ll evaluate the situation.”

Recent reports of Jose Mourinho‘s desire to sign a new full-back over the summer – Benjamin Mendy and Jordi Alba currently serve as the two most popular names – alongside Antonio Valencia‘s continued dominance of the right back role this season would have forced Darmian into considering whether there is indeed a place for him at Old Trafford.

You sense that, as Mourinho continues to build this United squad in his own image over the summer, the 27-year-old may be pushed to one side. Whether he has done enough to convince the Portuguese over the last nine months is indeed an open question.
