It’s been two years since they failed to sign the Spaniard as a deal collapsed in the last moments of the 2015 transfer-deadline day, with both clubs blaming each other.
They have now allegedly rekindled their interest in De Gea and are prepared to fund a world-record bid for a goalkeeper, believed to be around £50 million.
Jose Mourinho has stated he will not stand in the way of any players who wish to leave Old Trafford, and recent reports from Marca claim he will not stop the Spaniard if he chooses to leave.
De Gea signed a four-year contract which ties him to Old Trafford until June 2019, and the Portuguese boss will want to avoid any summer saga over the Spaniard, especially after he was previously left out under Louis van Gaal, and then re-introduced once a swap deal with Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas fell through.
He’s been a vital player at United this season and Mourinho must try to tie him down as he’s proven to be irreplaceable, but if he does truly want to leave, then the Portuguese boss can’t force him to stay and will be pushing for the best possible deal for his services.
