Rio Ferdinand reacts to Marcus Rashford’s free kick against Celta Vigo

Rio Ferdinand has reacted to Marcus Rashford‘s stunning free-kick during Manchester United’s first leg 1-0 win over Celta Vigo in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The 19-year-old, with 67 minutes gone, won a free kick to the right-hand side of Celta’s penalty area and lashed an unstoppable drive into the far corner to hand Jose Mourinho‘s a vital away goal.

Man United comfortably saw out the last 20 minutes and will head to Old Trafford for the second leg firmly in the driving seat.

Ferdinand took to social media to express his enthusiasm for the younger, labelling him as the “man of the moment” following another piece of brilliance on the big stage.

There is something poetic about United spending millions upon millions to add that cutting edge to the squad, even breaking the world transfer record in an attempt to reassert their name on the world stage, only for a teenager from Wythenshawe to make the difference.

Rashford was far more than United’s goalscorer in Spain; he was the orchestrator going forward, making decoy runs and holding up the ball with admirable levels of awareness.

And then came the crowning moment. Rashford won a free kick and you knew straight away that nobody else – not even Paul Pogba – was getting a look in. This was his time, his game, and he stepped up with all the nonchalance and elegance of an established world beater to take United to within touching distance of the Europa League final.
