Juan Mata opens up about his relationship with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Juan Mata has addressed his relationship with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, claiming they’ve never had an argument.

Many believed Mata would be leaving Old Trafford after the Portuguese boss took over last summer, but he claims there was nothing wrong after the former Chelsea manager sold him whilst they were together at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho has a tendency to criticise his players, as we’ve seen with the likes of Luke Shaw, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones this season.

However, Mata claims there is nothing wrong between the pair as he believes Mourinho has the ability to get the best out of players.

“It’s complicated, but managing personalities is almost more important than the tactical or physical side,” he said.

“It is having the ability to motivate players and communication should be in a positive way, the environment is good.

“People express themselves better when they feel comfortable. That happens in football and in all jobs.

The midfielder says there are no issues over his history with Mourinho.

“I’ve never had a bad relationship with Mourinho.

“We’ve never had an argument. Our relationship is normal.

“Simply, at Chelsea I wanted to play in a certain way and at United there were other types of players more in line with my characteristics.

“We are both the same, we have not changed.”

Mourinho has actually been full of praise of Mata over the course of the season and he’s only been happier after the Spaniard gave everything he could to get back to full fitness so quickly after surgery.
